| Visit to Woolbeding Gardens |
A horticultural haven bursting with colourful planting, a contemporary glasshouse Heatherwick Studio has unveiled its latest project, a kinetic glasshouse set on the edge of the gardens here at Woolbeding. This unfolding structure provides the focal point to a new garden that reveals how much the ancient Silk Route – which linked the Western world with the Middle East and Asia – has influenced English gardens of today. It features ten steel ‘sepals’ with glass and aluminium façade which take four minutes to open, creating an immense 141m2 space in the shape of a crown. The glasshouse draws inspiration from the spirit of Victorian ornamental terrariums. It deploys cutting-edge engineering to provide a functional protective structure while at the same time offering a beguiling, decorative element to the new Silk Route Garden. 10.30 am for a group talk at 11.00 am National Trust Members £3.00 pp (please bring your membership card) Non-National Trust Members £15.00 pp On site café for lunch We will be parking at a private house nearby – there is no parking permitted at Woolbeding Gardens – where possible please share a car – all names need to be booked in for the parking arrangement (further details nearer the time) contact Bridget Adler to book – reservation on payment please tasm.membership@gmail.com or 07885 699479 please make payment to Arts Society Midhurst 20-20-65-00295604 |

| CHARLESTON, MONK’S HOUSE & BERWICK CHURCH |
CHARLESTON HOUSE charts the art and lives of the artists Vanessa Bell, Duncan Grant and their contemporaries. Bell and Grant began to paint Charleston from the outset. Not just the walls, but every surface imaginable, transforming the house into a living, breathing work of art. Over the following decades, Charleston became a gathering point for some of the 20th century’s most radical artists, writers and thinkers known collectively as the Bloomsbury group. It is where they lived out their progressive social and artistic ideals. A visitor assistant will accompany you around the house as you explore the individually designed and hand-painted rooms. There will be a staggered entry time for the group and the remaining time will be spent in the garden or having lunch – either bring your own picnic or in the on-site café at Charleston House. MONK’S HOUSE is Leonard and Virginia Woolf's 16th-century country retreat. Nestled in the heart of rural Sussex, Monk’s House is a tranquil 16th-century weatherboarded cottage inhabited by Leonard and the novelist Virginia Woolf from 1919 until Leonard's death in 1969. Get to know Leonard and Virginia Woolf and the wider Bloomsbury Group by visiting Monk's House. Full of their favourite things, the house appears as if they just stepped out for a walk. BERWICK CHURCH is where Bishop Bell of Chichester wanted to revive the tradition of extensive murals in some of the small Downland Churches. The outbreak of WWII saw Grant and Bell with Quentin (Vanessa’s younger son by Clive) designing murals at Berwick with brightly coloured interpretations of English country life during wartime. Grant focused on Salvation and the medieval imagery of the ‘Labours of the Month’. Bishop Bell likened the achievement of the Bloomsbury artists at Berwick to that of Giotto who had been inspired by the life of St Francis and whose murals the bishop had seen himself in the church of St Francis at Assisi. Bishop Bell believed the murals represented a fulfilment of his vision to reunite religion and ‘modern’ art and so bring about a ‘spiritual awakening of our country’. COACH TRANSPORT TO HOUSE & CHURCH SO TIME TO RELAX BETWEEN EACH VISIT. THERE IS A CAFÉ AT CHARLSTON HOUSE BUT NOT AT MONK’S HOUSE. ALTERNATIVELY BRING YOUR OWN PICNIC/REFRESHMENTS TICKETS ARE AVAILABLE AT THE SEPTEMBER LECTURE OR ON-LINE BY TELEPHONING OR EMAILING BRIDGET ADLER ON A FIRST-COME,FIRST- SERVED BASIS – NUMBERS MUST BE CONFIRMED BY END OF SEPTEMBER TICKET PRICE £40.00 per person to include entry to house and church and transport Excluding lunch/refreshments If you are a member of the National Trust the cost will be £34.00 as there will be no charge to Monk’s House if you show your membership card. | A GUIDED WALKING TOUR IN THE CITY OF LONDON |
"Romans to Rogers" Architecture from the Romans through to Lord Foster & Lord Rogers was the suggested title of our recent visit to London. And so, blessed with blue skies and a warm sunshine, we set off to explore 2000 years of history and architecture in the City of London. Our guide, Tony Tucker, a Blue Badge guide and NADFAS lecturer, led us round the hidden corners finding Roman remains, secret crypts, a beautiful medieval church and secret gardens and alleyways. We contrasted these to the Victorian and the ultra modern - threaded together with stories and histories to bring all alive. A lasting memory will be coming across an extensive section of Roman wall behind which rose three huge new glass and steel skyscrapers, certainly bringing home to us in visual clarity the impact and meaning behind the title of our walk. A hugely successful and memorable day! |

| GUIDED TOUR OF HATFIELD HOUSE |
Visit Report On the 20th may we had a most enjoyable visit to Hatfield House, a beautiful Jacobean House built by Robert Cecil., Earl of Salisbury in 1611, and once the home of Elizabeth 1st before became Queen. The House, described as one of the Treasure houses of England, lived up to its name and every room was a surprise and delight. The lovely sunny afternoon was ideal for exploring the famous and beautiful gardens. We were also lucky to see the exquisite private gardens which are only open once a week. A truly memorable visit. |
