| MYSTICAL TEMPLES AND MAGICAL SILKWEAVING - THE ART OF BURMA AND LAOS |
| Denise Heywood |
A Study Day with Denise Heywood in Rogate Village Hall The day will examine the art of Burma (Myanmar) and Laos The temples, textiles, dance performances, literature, landscapes, rivers and people of Laos and Burma (Myanmar) are infused with the spirit of Buddhism, a philosophy that has inspired some of the greatest Art and Architecture in the world. This Study Day starts with the thousands of mystical temples of Pagan (Bagan) of Burma, scattered across a vast plain, dating from the 11th century. It shows their murals, sculptures and glittering spires and reveals the symbolism and history of Buddhism. In nearby Laos in the mist-shrouded mountains of the north, is Luang Prabang, on the Mekong river, to-day a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In this remote spot there are many Buddhist temples, some dating from the 16th century, superbly gilded and frescoed, with tiered roofs that sweep to the ground. The legacy of French colonial architecture in the town is also discussed, where elegant wooden houses with Lao motifs built in the 19th century blend harmoniously with Lao architecture, a unique fusion of East-West influences. The day concludes with the Living arts, especially the shimmering Silk Weaving with natural dyes, (once the preserve of the monarchy in both countries) an ancient craft of intricate designs and beauty that has been revived in more recent years. TICKETS £25 for LECTURES & LUNCH will be on sale at the next Midhurst DFAS monthly meeting on Tuesday 7th March, cheques to Midhurst DFAS. | VIVALDI IN VENICE |
| Peter Medhurst |
Vivaldi in Venice A Study Day with Peter Medhurst Vivaldi is arguably the one Baroque composer whose music is a direct reflection of the city in which it was composed. Listen to a Vivaldi concerto and hey presto you are transported directly to the heart of 18th century Venice. The reasons for this are many – Vivaldi’s passion for colour, display and spectacle in his music; the unusual way in which Venice solved its problems with the poor and the homeless; Vivaldi’s health problems and his eccentricities as a man and a priest. Against the luxurious backdrop of 18th century Venice, and with live musical performances, this study day explores the amazing world of Vivaldi’s music - music that is as intrinsically Venetian as the canvasses of Canaletto. Session 1 The day opens with an introduction to the city of Venice, and explores what it is that has made Venice unique among European urbanizations. It examines Venice’s great love of ritual and spectacle and how this in turn is reflected in the music of Vivaldi – particularly in his concertos. It also looks at how Venice managed to redefine itself after its decline in the 17th and 18th centuries and how the music of Vivaldi and his contemporaries was designed to reflect Venice’s Indian summer of newfound confidence and brilliance. Session 2 The second lecture examines the role of the Ospedali in the social and musical world of Venice. It looks, particularly, at the Mendicanti and Pieta institutions – with which Vivaldi and his father had strong musical connections – and will show a wide range of documents, manuscripts and paintings that throw light on this very important area of Venetian charity and culture. It also examines some of the concertos that Vivaldi wrote for the pupils at the institutions. Session 3 The final session explores the Vivaldi’s musical style as well as looking at the impact Vivaldi had on his Venetian contemporaries, as well as on the music of JS Bach, GF Handel and J Stanley. |

NADFAS SUSSEX AREA Contact: Philip Down (Area Chairman) Punches Corner, Punches Lane, S. Mundham, Chichester, PO20 1NA Email: philrdown@talktalk.net Tel: 01243 266704 Area Study Series 2016 - “An Artistic Potpourri” To be held at “The Ark”, Turners Hill, W. Sussex, RH10 4RA Dates: Fri 19th February, Wed 9th March, Friday 8th April 2016 Cost: £28 per day (incl. Morning Coffee and Buffet Lunch) Timing: 10.00am to 3.00pm Special Interest Day 1. Fri 19 February, 2016 Tutor: Mary Alexander "Gainsborough in Bath: High Society & The Bath Season" - “In Bath I do this and I do that, and I do nothing, and I go here and go there and go nowhere. Such is ye life of Bath and the effects of this place that I forget my cares and everything.” David Garrick, actor and friend of Thomas Gainsborough. When Gainsborough moved to Bath in 1758 it was a bustling cosmopolitan spa centre experiencing a phenomenal building boom, attracting nobility and wealthy merchants alike, and described by Mrs Delany at the time as ‘the busiest idle place in the world’. At the height of the season it was estimated that Bath could accommodate some 12,000 visitors, and many stayed for several weeks to drink the waters, attend concerts, shop for luxury goods and generally gossip and parade on the fine promenades. Contemporary journals and letters (including Gainsborough’s witty correspondence) and caricatures are used to bring the city, its buildings and personalities to life. The day explores how and why a young, entrepreneurial Gainsborough identified Bath as ‘the’ place from which to build his reputation. What was the experience like for those who jostled to sit to Mr Gainsborough during the Bath season? What did High Society do to entertain themselves? The focus will be on Gainsborough’s work in Bath and comparisons will be made with his contemporaries and rivals. For painting was, in Gainsborough’s words, ‘a little business for the eye’. Special Interest Day 2. Wed 9 March, 2016 Tutor: David Phillips “Connoisseurs Conundrums: Restoration, Forgery, Expertise” - The Secret Surface: how time and restoration transform the appearance of paintings. Art restoration has been the subject of some notorious controversies. We get up to speed with the issues, in a voyage of discovery down through the painted surface from varnish to canvas, explaining the transformations behind the debates. We look at dramatic before and after details in some famous pictures including Holbein’s Ambassadors & the Sistine Chapel Ceiling. Fine Art Forgery: Craftsmanship or Conjuring Trick? Fake scientific and documentary evidence can play as big a role in forgery scandals as clever fabrication of the artwork itself, as we discover in a “ripping yarns” survey featuring the familiar Tom Keating and Van Meegeren amongst a supporting cast of exotic rogues. We come right up to date with the Greenhalghs of Bolton. Who Says? Can we trust the experts on good and bad in art? Art critics and experts are often hilariously lampooned, and we focus on the bafflingly mysterious Polish Rider in the Frick to evaluate a decades-long project to settle just which paintings Rembrandt did. That’s ended up as much a study of the trickiness of attribution as of Rembrandt. Right now world Leonardo authority Martin Kemp is utterly convinced he has discovered a new work by the master – but many specialists beg to differ. We review a number of controversies, and feel the fury of judges listening to connoisseurial assertions, when questions of quality come to court. But the minefields facing experts need not deter the rest of us from making artistic judgments just based on life experience we all have. Special Interest Day 3. Fri 8 April, 2016 Tutor: Linda Collins “From Can-Can to Soup Can” - We start today in the Paris of 1850 – the lively city of cabaret’s, can-can girls and artistic bohemia. We follow the course of art from academic pictures, through the Impressionists, the Post-Impressionists and beyond, looking at how the thread of art leads ever forward towards the present. The second Session looks at the huge number of artists in Paris at this time and at the lively life they lived there. We consider the five major art groups comprising the Ecole de Paris, the Ecole Francaise, Purism, Dadaism and Surrealism. We leave Paris for this session with WW11 approaching and many of our artists departing for New York. The afternoon session looks briefly at the history of modern art in New York before rejoining our French artists in the city. We see how Peggy Guggenheim looked after her old French pals and introduced them to her New York set. The French artists influenced the New York based artists such as de Kooning, Rothko and Pollock. From Abstract Expressionism we move on to Pop Art, before finishing the day with Warhol's famous cans - and some lively debate.
